Read this book if you like:
>stalker romances
>questionable H
>overuse of the word husky (14 times :) )
>hot af sex scenes
>not overwhelming inner dialogue
>lovable characters
>the TV show You
I'm honestly not sure if I can write a coherent review on this but y'all know I do my best.
I don't think I've ever fallen in love with such a stalkerish man. Yes, I have book boyfriends. Yes, Callum ranks top 3. Fight me.
How to introduce this. Think Christian Grey with the pet names of Rhys. Think how Zade from Hunting and Haunting Adeline should've been written. Think of the Christian Grey sex scenes but like... somehow better. Don't ask me how. I don't fucking know. I'm not one to get attached to characters in smutty reads. Normally, they're not much better than the visual side of things, if you know what I mean. Predictable. Stupid. But. Emery.
Emery is honestly such a morally grey character in and within herself. I found it rather impressive the way that JT portrayed her life and sexuality. Like this shit is kinky as all get out but I enjoyed how it was more of a journey for her. I liked that it was not as annoying as... what was that questionable book I read that had Jack as the H? I don't know. I find it rather annoying when the inner dialogue of the h is so against everything that H is doing to her body because then it feels kinda rapey. But, although I tagged this non-con, as I feel it definitely is, it didn't feel as morally grey, if you will as other dub non-con books I've read have. I enjoyed the aspects that were added into this book. I loved the fact that she ran a bookstore and thought that it was done so much better than Charlie Lastra in Book Lovers' bookstore... more believable.
Now. At this very moment, I can't think of any other heroes to compare Callum to. But there are some. There stored in the back of my mind. I mean, I'm definitely not saying that I would particularly enjoy this exact experience in my personal love life, but reading about it? Fuck yes, sign me up. I definitely did amount it to Joe from the stalker-romance Netflix series You. It surprised me the length of his stalking and just how far he went to ensure that everything was set up nice and perfect for her to say yes to him.
Thinking of prior books, I appreciate this authors inclusivity in body sizes...although I think it would've been nice to see some lgbtqia+ rep. But that's just me, maybe :). I also enjoyed the fact that she didn't overload the book with so much internal dialogue as many other well known authors do sometimes. It's rather aggravating, to be honest.
Speaking of aggravating, don't read this book if you want an unpredictable plot. This was blaringly obvious, but as I was, frankly, reading it for the smut, it didn't bother me. However, if you are as easily won over as me, you will fall in love with Emery and Callum and wish you were them.
I loved the side characters, like her best friend and her employees. That just felt necessary to say. I know that sometimes there are books with overloaded, crazy complex side characters and I loved that they were simple enough to not get confused or mixed up, but differentiated enough that I found a speck of love and admiration for each and every one of them. I even liked the attorney bro.
So. As for my rating. It's definitely a 3.5 or 3.75. But, certain aspects of this book really motivated me to be a little less stingy on my rating.
It’s going to be a disaster. I already know it will be. When liars like us fall in love, everything else falls apart. But, for now at least, we’re falling together.
