Growing Connected by Penny Heart
Review:
This feels like a 2.5 star read. I rounded up to 3. All of these thoughts are my opinion and not meant to harm anyone. This review contains spoilers.I received a free ARC from the author so long as I left a review.
The premise is that there's the female main character that is a workaholic. She's a teacher and always is working, always finding something else to do that can fill up her time, to the point where to me, at least, it seems like she's drowning. Enter Jacob. Broody, broken-hearted, scruffy man that flirts with her after not flirting with ANYONE BARELY since his ex, Candice, turned out to be a total psycho-freak. Apparently, she stole a bunch of money from him, was mentally/emotionally abusive, yada yada. What annoyed me about this book was that every single time something good happened, the author had to mess it up. Now, I can hear some of you saying that some of my most favorite books had the most difficult stories, the hardships... yeah yeah. But sometimes it's not the same. Like it was just flat out annoying. It didn't intrigue me into the plot. It made me wonder how much longer I had to read. And I skimmed a bit, because a lot of it was Jacob being like NO I LOVE YOU. And Susan being like WE NEED TO WAIT.. or weird interactions at work. I get that that's an appeal sometimes... I can't put my finger on it why it bothered me so much. Anyways, they work on this garden together at her school (Ada Lovelace, the name I loved), the one that Susan took on even though she needs to relax. Jacob is a really smart garden-y guy. There's toxic males in this book. I don't think there was one man that wasn't toxic. Fun times.
Did I stay up all night to finish this? Yes.
Are the characters 2 dimensional at best? Yes
Is there a strong-ish main female character? Yes
Is Jacob problematic? Yes
Is Eric a little man-whore who needs a life besides screwing blonde bimbos? Abso-fucking-lutely.
